Tourette syndrome is a condition of the nervous system that causes the sufferer to make sudden and involuntary movements or sounds. These sudden and involuntary movements or noises are called tics and the syndrome can range from mild to severe.

The two main symptoms of Tourette syndrome are motor tics and verbal tics.

Sudden and involuntary body movements are called motor tics. Motor tick includes:

  • Blink
  • Distortion of face.
  • Sudden jaw movement.
  • shake head
  • to jump
  • Shrug.
  • Sudden opening of the mouth.
  • Shake hands.

Involuntary vocalizations by a person are called verbal tics. The meaning of these words may seem redundant and most of the time these sounds seem irrelevant. Verbal ticks include:

  • Try to inhale something.
  • Mumble
  • to shout
  • to whisper

In some cases, verbal tics may include profanity or other antisocial sounds. However, this is very rare.

It’s important to remember that Tourette syndrome can also occur with other problems, such as:

  • Obsessive-compulsive disorder.
  • Anxiety
  • Disappointment

What is the main reason?

The exact cause of Tourette syndrome is still unknown, although most medical research suggests that the syndrome is linked to structural differences in brain parts and genes. People with a family history of the disease are genetically at higher risk of developing the disease.

The disease is more common in males and hence can be considered as a gender based risk factor.

How is it diagnosed and treated?

To be diagnosed with Tourette syndrome, the following conditions must be present:

  • The person concerned must have at least two motor tics and one verbal tic.
  • The person concerned must have experienced these tics for at least the last one year.
  • The appearance of these ticks should appear before the age of 18 years.
  • These symptoms should not be due to external factors such as medication or drugs.
  • Treatment options for Tourette syndrome are limited.

However, in most cases the appearance of symptoms does not affect the normal functioning of the person’s daily life. Hence, with proper support and guidance the person is able to handle himself very easily. guy with tourette’s.

In some cases, medications may be prescribed to control symptoms associated with other diseases. Therapy and counseling can be very helpful along with education of the affected person and their family members about Tourette syndrome.
