It is the most common digestive disorder that occurs when acidic stomach juices back up into the esophagus. It can occur in all ages from children to adults. It is a chronic condition that can occur in recurring episodes. A person usually experiences acid reflux more frequently than usual. It can be treated with over the counter medications or even sometimes with home remedies. GERD can also be prevented by making lifestyle changes and improving diet.

It is observed that asthmatic patients are commonly affected by GERD. This is when the lower esophageal sphincter relaxes during an asthma flare, allowing stomach acid to flow or back up into the lower esophagus. Some asthma medications can make the condition worse. Not only this, but acid reflux can make the condition worse for asthmatics by causing allergic reactions in the lungs or air.

 Signs and symptoms

People with GERD may experience the following signs and symptoms:

  • Irritation or burning in the chest after meals.
  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Food or liquid reflux
  • Chest pain
  • Indigestion
  • Distortion
  • Chicken inflammation
  • Difficulty sleeping
  • Asthma harmful symptoms

 Causes and risk factors

The basic cause of GERD is acid reflux. At the bottom of the esophagus is a band of muscles that form the esophageal sphincter. The sphincter relaxes and closes again during ingestion. If there is any weakness or abnormality in the muscles, it could be GERD.

The following risk factors may increase the likelihood of GERD:

  • Hiatal hernia
  • Delayed decomposition
  • Pregnancy
  • Scleroderma
  • Smoking
  • Eating a late dinner
  • Eating fried foods frequently
  • Excessive alcohol or coffee consumption
  • Use of medications such as aspirin

After a detailed case history and physical examination, the following tests are conducted to confirm the diagnosis of GERD.

Upper endoscopy – A thin flexible tube is inserted into the throat with a light and camera to analyze the thin and flexible inner lining. Endoscopy helps detect inflammation of the esophagus. It is used in extreme cases to extract samples of esophageal tissue sent for biopsy. gerd va rating

Ambulatory acid probe test – the doctor inserts a monitor into the esophagus to measure the time that stomach acid regurgitates. This monitor is attached to a small computer that is worn by the patient around the waist or over the shoulder.

Esophageal fasciculation – This is done to test the laryngeal contractions of the esophageal muscles during swallowing. It is muscle coordination and action.

X-ray chest-throat This is done to look at the silhouette of the esophagus, stomach, and upper intestine to diagnose esophageal stricture that may be interfered with. gerd va rating

  • H2 Blockers – These are given to reduce acid production
  • Antacids – neutralize acid secreted by the stomach
  • Prokinetics- speeds up the process of emptying the stomach
  • Antibiotics – In some cases, antibiotics are prescribed for an infection if present.

Surgical options

Fundoplication – the upper part of the stomach is wrapped around the lower part of the esophagus to create pressure on the food pipe. This prevents acid reflux from the stomach. Fundoplication is either partial or complete.

Endoscopic procedure – this consists of several procedures done to tighten the sphincter muscle to prevent reflux. It uses heat to the sphincter muscle or radiofrequency to create relaxation.

LINX Device – The LINX device is a small ring made of magnetic beads wrapped around the joint of the stomach and esophagus. The magnetic force between the beads causes the sphincter muscles to close enough to allow acid to flow back into the food pipe. However, there is enough space for food to pass through the esophagus into the stomach.

Dietary and lifestyle changes

Some dietary and lifestyle changes are required, which include,

  • Avoid overeating
  • Do not eat 2-3 hours before going to bed
  • Quit smoking and alcohol consumption
  • Weight management
  • Avoid acidic foods that act as triggers like caffeine, garlic, alcohol, sauces, peppermint, spicy foods, floury foods, etc.
  • With the top of the head at an angle below the stomach
  • Anxiety and stress management
